When Asthma Attacks: Top Tips For Controlling Your Condition

Posted on December 30, 2018March 28, 2019 by louisedelia

Asthma is a dangerous condition that has the potential to seriously affect your life. It is important to take proactive measures to get asthma under control before you experience a critical event that puts you in the hospital. The next few paragraphs will give you some practical tips for controlling asthma symptoms.

If you suffer from asthma, avoid smoke, fumes and vapors. Thus, you need to avoid cigarettes and cigars and be vigilant about steering clear of environmental or workplace exposure to smoke.

An important tip to help protect your asthma-afflicted children is to always refrain from smoking around them. It has been medically proven that smoking can cause asthma or make existing symptoms worse. You should never put your children in a situation where they are exposed to people who are smoking.

Smoking is a horrible habit, even deadly, for an asthma sufferer. Although smoking is terrible for everyone, it is even worse for an asthma sufferer due to less oxygen supply in the lungs and that can trigger an attack.

During an attack that isn’t severe, force all air from your lungs. Breath out as hard and fast as you can. Force your lungs to expel as much air as possible. Take three breaths in succession. These breaths don’t have to be deep, just breathe a little. Then take a deep breath, pulling as much air as possible into your lungs. When your lungs are as full as you can stand, force the air out. Not only will you breathe in rhythm, but you’ll focus more intently on how you are breathing and become aware of breathing problems. It will also empty your lungs of air, so that they’re ready to take in new, fresh air. It is okay that you cough up some sputum, you really want to breathe right again.

If you are prone to asthma attacks, avoid any cigarette or other tobacco smoke. If you smoke, try quitting. Avoid breathing in vapors from smoke or other chemical-type fumes. These can trigger a severe asthma attack that can be difficult to get under control. If others are smoking nearby, leave that area as quickly as you can.

Everyone in your family, including you, should get the flu vaccination every year. If you have asthma, it’s important to prevent all respiratory infections, if at all possible. You can start by taking simple precautions, such as washing your hands and getting proper vaccinations when due.

Unscented products are the safest option for those who suffer from asthma. Products that contain fragrance, such as perfumes, colognes, or air fresheners, can pollute the air triggering your asthma. Certain things in the home, such as newly installed carpet or fresh paint, can also release chemical irritants. Keep your indoor air clean and free of pollutants to stay healthy.

Pay a visit to your physician if you feel that your symptoms are taking a turn for the worse. You should use these tips whenever you can to reduce symptoms, and improve your life.…
